1. Cracking

  • Shrinkage: concrete shrinks as it dries

  • Subgrade Settlement: The ground underneath shifting or not being properly compacted

  • Control Joints: Ensuring joints are cut at the right depth and spacing to "direct" where cracks occur.

2. Thickness

  • Garage/shop: supporting standard automobiles and general storage.

  • Heavy Duty: for industrial use or accommodating large machinery like tractors or medium & heavy duty vehicles

  • Living area/Walkways: areas that are only used for supporting people or providing a path may save you some money.

3. Finish

  • Polished: Generally used in residential garages where the surface needs to be smooth or aesthetically pleasing.

  • Brushed: A textured finish to provide traction.

  • Color Matching: When a driveway meets a walkway the color needs to match. sometimes this will vary depending on the exact mix.

4. Prep & Reinforcement:

  • Subgrade Composition: What type of soil is the foundation being poured on? Rock, sand, clay.

  • Compaction: A strong foundation needs a properly compacted base to prevent sagging, which could lead to failure.

  • Reinforcement: Concrete has terrible tensile strength and requires strong reinforcing materials. Carbon steel, epoxy-coated, galvanized and stainless steel rebar. depending on the application
